So, I live just outside Cincinnati...noted for pollution, allergies, weird chili, and rampant conservatism. When I was flipping through the Cincinnati Enquirer yesterday, I saw this article.

Apparently I need to start memorizing Bible verses if I'd like to commit a crime, because in Hamilton County, that's all I need to get out of a jail sentence.

Eric Hine is a free man today because of his Biblical knowledge.

Hine, 43, of Corryville, was in court today charged with receiving stolen property.

He is accused of using a stolen credit card at 1:15 a.m. today to try to buy items at the Walgreen’s at 1 W. Corry St.

When he appeared this morning before Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge John Burlew, Hine’s attorney was hoping for a low bond for Hine and told the judge he was a churchgoer who works fulltime at a company that makes wine racks.

Because judges hear all kinds of stories from lawyers and defendants hoping for low bonds, Burlew wanted to test Hine on his claim of attending an Avondale church.
So, Burlew told Hine to recite the 23rd Psalm.
“The Lord is my Shepard; I shall not want,” Hine told the judge.
Impressed but still skeptical, Burlew told Hine if he could recite the entire passage, he would let him out of jail.
Hine then reeled off all six verses and 118 words – and even drew some applause from those sitting in the courtroom.

Burlew was true to his word and released Hine on a $10,000 unsecured appearance bond. That meant Hine had to sign a bond to promise to pay $10,000 if he didn’t make his next court appearance in the case.

WTF?!?!?!?!?!? Is there NOT a separation of church and state???? HOW can this HAPPEN?!?!? How is this allowed?!? How is the district attorney of Hamilton County not running roughshod over this judge?

I am fucking flabbergasted. Seriously.

is everything we see on the news really news?

I stumbled upon this article on Unknown News and totally agree with the theory working here...would more Americans care about Universal Health Care or the environment if the news industry went about reporting the things that matter in a different way?

The tragedy at Virginia Tech was gruesome. However, has anything been resolved by constant coverage by cable news? Has anyone been made more aware? Definitely not. I believe it's time for American news to focus on what Americans care about...not paternity and love affairs.

And, if that's what most Americans really care about...I'm expatriating.

A single act of violent crime is not news. Ever. Period. I can see giving the Virginia Tech story about 60 seconds, because it was the deadliest something-something in American history. And I'll give you another two minutes to mention that our nations' policies on gun control and mental health lead to a more dysfunctional and violent society. Anything more than that is exploitation, pure and simple.

How many people died on Monday, April 16 because our government won't treat health care as a basic human right? How many people died in preventable workplace accidents? Or from unsafe consumer products? Or from cancer caused by industrial pollution? I don't have those numbers, but in every single case, it's damn sure more than thirty. Ten times that many people were killed on the Saturday just two days before the VT massacre, as a result of America's unnecessary, lie-based war in Iraq.

All these deaths are real news stories, because they are caused by fixable problems in American policy and politics. But these stories don't come with the same violence, pathos, and general sexiness of a crazed lone gunman on a rampage.

Yes, we are shocked and saddened by this story. We are shocked and saddened that even some of our favorite, most progressive news sources took precious hours away from actual news reporting last week, to wallow in this sensationalist muck.

Happy Earth Day! What are some of your favorite ways to reduce, reuse and recycle?

In honor of Earth Day, we've switched all our heavily used lights to compact fluorescent bulbs, which were on wicked huge sale at GASP! Wal-Mart today...

On a more consistent level, my family has always kept the heat as cool as possible and the air conditioning as warm as possible...run only full loads of dishes and laundry...and taken short showers because it's cheaper!

Since living in the Northeast, where just about everything is much more conscientious, I've started taking my own bags to the grocery (which is looked upon as absolutely insane in suburban Kentucky,) stopped eating commercially raised fish, and drive as little as possible/combine trips. It's difficult in this neck of the woods...there is NO reliable, safe public transportation and the only way to get around is a personal auto, but every little bit helps.

There was a boy I knew long ago...we worked together. He had a very, um, overprotective girlfriend, and I had my share of problems/paramours at the time. We drifted apart, then in and out of each other's lives for the next ten years. I still know him well and call him a friend...but he is scarred from a marriage that didn't work...and women that treated him badly.

If only I would have gotten to him earlier, maybe I wouldn't have been the love of his life, or he the love of mine...but maybe I could have been the woman that showed him that a lot of us like fun...and intimacy...and just loving life.

I still love everything about him, both who he was then and who is has become...which is fodder for another question of the day.

really, nothing is better than rose mcgowan with a machine gun prosthesis and stuntwomen running a ship's mast on a dodge challenger. the chicks in death proof have totally inspired be to pump up...because you never know when you may need to straddle a car door and beat a man senseless with a steel pipe.

so, i have two more interviews tomorrow...one with a day spa in north carolina, and on the Outer Banks, no less...and the other with a spa management company...they have quite a few spa director positions open across the midwest.

plus, i'm still waiting for a call back from that phatty luxury hotel in austin...
